anxiously waiting...

i cannot lie guys - i am freaking out today. i've got a lot of excitement inside me because it's my last day of school before break but i am also incredibly anxious that my flight is going to get cancelled tonight. i think because of my thanksgiving experience (ended up driving 10 hours home when my flight was called off) i am kind of expecting something to go wrong with this flight. please wish me luck because my flight isn't til 10 tonight and i'm not driving myself to the airport so if it does get cancelled i'm stranded. from what i hear the weather in chicago has basically been perfect except for the day before thanksgiving when the fog was prohibiting flights from landing and then a thundersnow/blizzard which caused a winter storm warning that is hopefully ending as we speak. i would appreciate it, mother nature, if you would allow me to get home with no problems tonight.

alright enough whining. as for the excitement part, today should be (emphasis on the should - one never really knows with middle schoolers) a fun day. i baked about 200 sugar cookies last night and bought pretty much all the icing giant had for sale to get ready for a christmas cookie decorating party for the kiddos. other than that, i have some serious plans to get them to make christmas cards for their parents and hopefully collect massive amounts of gifts from the kiddos. for some reason, parents and students are under the impression that teachers need a lot of shower gel and tiny stuffed animals. i happen to prefer the chocolate gifts and gift cards more, but beggars can't be choosers.

my day yesterday ended up being just as productive as i needed it to be. i managed to get everything on my to do list done except going to the gym. and i was supposed to wake up early this morning to go, but you know what? i didn't. it looks like this week is going to be a week where i work out 3 times, tops. and you know what? as alex reminded me yesterday, that's totally normal. i think it's so easy to get caught up in this blog world's concept of a normal week of working out being AT LEAST 5 days and i feel like a failure if i do less than that. in fact i shoot for 6 days. honestly, i do feel better when i work out 5-6 days out of the week...my body craves the sweat and i really love my time at the gym. but for most people in the world, 3 days would still be considered a successful week, and i have to remember that and stop comparing myself to everyone in the blogiverse who is managing to fit in workouts when i am not. this week was busy, i had stuff i needed to get done, and one of those things was recovering from a mild back injury. so c'est la vie...next week will be better, or it won't, but either way i'm going to do what's right for me.

i also managed to do a solid job clearing out the produce in my fridge. i've eaten all my fruit (or i will have once i eat my banana snack in the morning) and almost all of my salad greens are gone. i'm throwing out very little before i head to the airport today, which i'm considering a success. that does mean i'm eating a lot of the salad above. thank god it's good.

i hope you all have a great friday and if you're heading home for christmas tonight, good luck with your traveling. know that i'm right there with you!

  1. Weeeeeeeeeee!! Yay for going home today and for the monkeys behaving and giving you awesome gifts (I refuse to believe anything less for you!)!!! Also you're a much better teacher than I am...made some snickerdoodles and the cherubs will have to deal...their parents will be bringing stuff, too though, so I'm not that worried ;)

  2. I'm crossing my fingers for you that you make the flight to Chicago!!!! Sending all of my good thoughts for you that you make it home tonight :)
And I agree- it is stressful in the bog world with rest days. I say lets screw em ;) We rest when we want!

  3. I thought about you this morning when I heard flights were being cancelled - yikes! Let me know whether or not you get there. I'm a bit worried about our drive tomorrow morning, too. Could be a bit treacherous. Hope the kids loved your cookies!

  5. Weather is clear here but I know that a lot of flights were canceled/delayed last night and this morning. Hopefully you'll be good to go tonight though!

Thanks for mentioning the workout time off thing. It's so easy to get caught up in blogland where most people work out at least 5x a week when in reality, a lot of people are satisfied with only working out 2-3x. I may have to take a few days off when I'm home due to some foot issues so it's nice to hear a healthy reminder that you don't need to work out every day!

  6. Yet again, I wish you were my teacher! All I ever got on the holiday’s from my teachers were erasers and pencils, lamesauce. Last year the day before winter break my students and I did hardly anything but binge on sugar, chips, and make sock snowmen. I'm sure all the parents appreciated their kids coming home hyped up on sugar, whoops! Thank goodness they gave me their gifts when they dropped them off in the morning…

    1. P.S. Hoping your flight isn't delayed or cancelled tonight! If it is we're just around the corner and you can crash on our couch versus the dirty airport seats... XO

  7. Yay for successful fridge cleanouts!! Doesn't it feel satisfying? I totally fall into the trap of comparing myself to other bloggers sometimes. I just try to remember that what works for some people doesn't work for everyone. I don't think I will ever spend 2 hours at the gym again and that is totally fine with me.

  8. Win for clearing out your fridge! I have been trying to do that since I'm not only going home for the holidays, but am moving out really soon too. I am a sucker for those break-and-bake sugar cookies with the pictures in the middle. So good. And I totally know what you mean about feeling like you aren't working out when you only do a few times a week. My friends who aren't super into fitness think I work out a lot when I go on like one run haha so I think we are a rare breed and need to realize that it's not the end of the world if we take some time off.

  9. Have a safe flight back to Chicago!! Hopefully everything goes smoothly and the weather cooperates for you. I actually haven't worked out that much this week either. I got in one "usual" workout and had two days of hip hop, but that's it. It's a little weird going from the craziness of Best Body Bootcamp to this, but that's just what worked for me this week. Working out on Monday (the day between my two hour marathon hip hop rehearsal and my one hour + a little change rehearsal and graduation) would've been stupid, and given the choice between packing on Wednesday/eating dinner on Thursday or working out, obviously packing and eating won. Like you said, c'est la vie. Sometimes la vie in Blogland is a little obsessive on the workout/healthy eating front anyway, and I think it's healthier to stay away from that obsessive mindset than to work out constantly.

  10. There is so much pressure, especially in this fabulous blog world, to work out perfectly, eat perfectly, and be PERFECT! I have to remind myself not to live my life in comparison to everyone's highlight reel, and when I remember to do that, I always feel so much better. Love this post! You're spot on. :)

  11. You maaaaaade it!!! :D Yayyyy!!
Such fabulous cookie fun! I hope they didn't make too much of a mess.
And 3 days is totally fine and normal. And you know it isn't going to be like that every week. So what if it is this week? Go with it, don't compensate, and just keep trucking forward! Hope Chicago is still clear and you get off with nothing worse than a rude shuttle driver. ;)

  12. Glad your able to look at the positives of only squeezing in 3 workouts this week.

I sure hope you made it to Chicago safely... because I'm actually watching the news right now & it stated that a lot of flights have been cancelled in Chicago!! Fingers crossed & saying prayers.
